In most households where an individual has taken up the calling to finally pursue their dreams, there’s sometimes a feeling of isolation and loneliness. They don’t feel the love or support. Sometimes this person can feel misunderstood and out of place even in their own family.
This isn’t due to loved ones purposefully seeking to discourage the entrepreneur. Our families aren’t out to get us.
I talk about this a lot because this is a hidden pitfall that every business owner and solopreneur has to overcome. I use that word overcome a bit forcefully because it’s more so about finessing your relationships.
Where’s The Support?
The Love Is Real But…
The first thing you have to remember is that your family and friends genuinely love you. When you are pursuing wealth and financial Independence, however, the relationship becomes more nuanced. That means, there are a few dynamics that come into play when dealing with your quest for more.
Not All Sacrifices Are Created Equal
Every project in anyone’s life that ever met any success required sacrifice. You cannot have success without sacrifice. Our loved ones, in the meanwhile, struggle with loving us the best way they know how. I say that because they truly do want the best for us.
The only problem is they do not have the same attitude and perspective that we do. Entrepreneurs are a different breed, completely. We understand success and sacrifice. There’s a connection between confidence belief and results.
We don’t need to see something physically before we can fully believe it is possible.
Now place this internal confidence In the middle of loved ones who can’t see what you see and only want you to be safe. Did you catch that?
Seeking Security Over Success
Your loved ones love you the best way they can. That is usually by keeping you safe. The conflict arises from you knowing that you need to take risks in order to win big.
Tell me if this sounds familiar:
“You know many people close their businesses. Are you sure you’re ready for this?”
“Maybe you should take a break from these business opportunities.”
“Remember that other thing that didn’t work out? All I’m saying is be careful.”
“Sounds good. I’m going to wait until you get a check, though.”
If you’ve heard any of these things from people you loved, don’t feel bad. This is a Tale As Old As Time. The sad part is that I haven’t heard anyone preparing new entrepreneurs for this conflict coming from their very own support system.
How Do You Get The Support You Need?
This is where you have to love them the best way they know how. That means you continue to appreciate their care for you. No Bitterness Just Better-ness!
Let me remind you, their cries for caution are coming from a good place. Charge their mindset and not their hearts. They can’t see what you see. They can only care for the person they see.
Think about it from their perspective. If you are on the verge of Your Big Break, there’s a good chance you’ve failed a couple of times. Guess who was there for every failure?
That’s right. Your loved ones saw you trip and fall every time. Can you blame them for questioning your credibility? Not really.
Opportunity Costs Defined
The place where I felt this conflict the most was in the area of my time. There’s a concept in business management called opportunity cost. This term helps you to wrap your head around the place where you should spend your time as a business owner.
Opportunity cost is the amount of opportunity you are missing based on you doing lower value tasks rather than the highest producing task you could possibly accomplish with your time.
Although a good CEO takes responsibility for every area of their business including cleanliness of the bathrooms and toilets, I think we can all agree that a CEOs time is better spent behind the desk with great decisions and ideas are made rather than scrubbing the toilets.
1 hour of cleaning the toilets brings in no new business
1 hour on the phone with a key client or prospect could possibly secure a contract that would keep the company afloat for an entire year.
In this dramatic example the opportunity cost of the CEO cleaning the toilet could possibly be a Year’s worth of Revenue.
Support & Unrealized Opportunity Costs
Now that you understand opportunity cost, and put a name to this concept, Let me explain why you might be experiencing a lack of support on misunderstanding from the very ones you love.
You might be on the verge of a huge breakthrough in your life and business. All it would take is a little time away to gather your thoughts and strategy.

If you’re like me you struggled to find the words to explain how important and beneficial this time could be for the entire family.
I didn’t know how to explain it. If I tried to share the possibilities, I thought that I would get shot down with the sharp reminder,
”I heard this before. You said this last time.”
Because I didn’t have much credibility, my wife valued my steady paycheck over the opportunity, that needed me to take some time off. This was unclear and abstract. Money coming into the bank account however was very practical.
How To Get The Right Support
No License To Play The Victim
What did I need to do? The only thing that you do in a case like this is prove yourself. Sad to say but true.
You have to:
- Do something amazing and
- Document it!
Nothing screams belief like results.
So how are you supposed to become successful without the support of those who are closest to you?
I know this is heavy. It may seem impossible. Trust me. I’ve been there. Understand me clearly. This is not a license for you to curl up in the fetal position and cry till daylight.
- You are not a victim.
- You are a Victor.
- You are a warrior.
- You were born to win.
- And when you will.
This is where we have to be responsible for our vision and success. You will have to do the same thing I did. You must find your own success community.
When The Leader Is Ready Their Support Community Will Appear
You are responsible for seeking out the community that will support, and most importantly, challenge you in a way your family is not guaranteed to. God supports you, though. I was encouraged by, Psalm 68:6 which says,
“God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land”.
You can’t wait for the right people to find you, You have to get up get out and get in their faces.

Ask questions, come around expecting to learn from them. Just make sure you don’t divulge your secret sauce before you have an edge in the market.
You can check out business meetups in your area or find the support you need on YouTube or social media. Look up a success coach or a specific consultant in your field.
I talked that length about the value of having a coach. My coach took something for me that was impossible, and spurred me into action within a month’s time.
